We have decided on the girls to use for the roles. A description of each actor will be posted later. During the callback we used a camera to film the girls to see what they will be like when filmed.
Here is the footage:
After the callbacks we have decided that we are going to cast Maggie. She is in Year 9 and not only is the best actress for the role but she is also the most prepared. After speaking to teachers we also agree she will be a good person to work with. We are figuring out our filming schedule with her now and will post later.
When doing research into conventions of short films Here I realised a list of things that I need to make sure to include or change about our short film.
- Short films are part of a niche market. We need to be aware of this as the audience for our short film will be precise. This is useful to us as it help to know who exactly our audience is going to be but we need to make sure that our film will appeal to those audience members. Here is a link to a post explaining who are audience is
- One consideration we looked at was characters. Our film uses a number of characters and normally there is only one or two characters. In our film only two characters have line as the other five characters are more mentioned and therefore don't add anything much to the role by knowing their background. Here is a link to the posts I made explaining who are characters are.
- As we are students our film doesn't have a budget. To make sure that we can make the film Jess and I had to think carefully about all the resources we could use. In the end the only thing that will cost us is filming in The Island which is £35 and hour.
For our film we are going to need four characters. Last year we were able to use myself and a close friend as this helped with arranging times to film, however, this year we are going to need four people who are going to fit the roles perfectly. This means that organisation is a big priority to be able to get the actors together fro filming.
The Characters are:
Goldilocks: This role will be played by a Year 9 or 8 girl from our school. We have had recommendations from drama teachers and will be holding auditions soon.
Red Riding Hood: This role will also be played by a girl in year 8 or 9 and will preferably be one of the girls that will be at the auditions. This character won't have any lines.
DCI Pearce: This will be played by out Media teacher as he is part of a local acting group and this will help as we can more easily arrange timings and so there will be an adult present for the filming with the younger girls.
DC Harpley: This character will be played by one of our friends. Harpley doesn't have any lines so the level of acting is not an issue and having someone we know will help with the directing.
Three bears: The last characters are the bears. These will be portrayed by bear skins and so the characters won't have any line but are more mentioned.
This is the warehouse that we will be filming at. This will be for the scene at the bottom of page 7. We chose the warehouse location as a place for Goldilocks to store the bear skins as warehouses are good places to hide items.
As this warehouse will be used for office furniture we are going to use tight frame shots and have no establishing shots. This is because the only props we want to be the bearskins and chairs for the girls. For the audience to be able to see the location because of the scaffolding and the cement walls.

We chose this locations because it is able to give us not only a real police setting but because it has a very worn down aesthetic. The walls themselves have colour so after recording I will have to tone down the colour as the vibrate tones don't fit into the theme and genre of our film.
The two characters that we are using that are based of fairytales are Goldilocks and Red Riding Hood. Both of these characters have big similarities and they are often seen together in drawings such as above.
Both the characters are portrayed as girls but both of the stories have been changed over time. Also both the stories take place in the woods with the girls more or less on their own. Lastly both stories include a wild animal that is seen as dangerous. Because of these similarities we want to have Red play a cameo in our short film.
This effect will help give the world that our film is set in slightly more depth by showing that there is more than one fairytale story that has been twisted.
This is the original script that we are going to use. This is a monologue that Jess wrote and the two of us are going to edit this to work as a short film as well as adding in new scenes and other ideas as well as camera angles. This full script and story board will be posted at a later date.
Here are some test posters that We made to help visualise what we are thinking about the posters. These have been made before any research and are our ver first initial ideas. Each poster uses a similar image fading into a black background. We chose this as the black background helps to set the mood for the film as well as make the image stand out to passers by. Also the black background makes it easier for us to add text onto the poster.
- The first poster uses a ver small child and we thought this design uses the aspect of the girls innocence of the famous three bears story.
- On the second poster it shows the girl being happy and smiling which i think juxtaposes the themes of our film too much.
- This third poster is good as we could add something in the background that we can have her looking at. This makes the poster easier to expand.
Here are the fonts that we are looking at. These four all look slightly similar and have similar connotations and we like that they have a vague creepy look. This is good as the fonts match the traditional three bears story.
When looking at these fonts we feel that they look like they portray the character of Goldilocks as they are handwritten and have that fairytale look but they gauge creepiness coming from our psychopathic killer.
Click Here to see our choice in the fonts and a preview of the fonts on screen.
When thinking about a song for the opening of our film one of the choices was this. We chose this song because we like the contrapuntal feel that this song gives and the lyrics would be good for goldilocks to hum in the opening as the song fades out to the diagetic sounds in the interrogation room.
When looking back at my AS blog i found that when making and researching our film we included a lot of audience and this involved both written posts and filmed interview, however, the audience we could talk to were only people that we knew ourselves. In A2 I would like to include some audience members from social media sites that we can contact and get more opinions from people who are from different places and get their opinions of our film.
Also I would like to post more often and include everything that Jess and myself have discussed because last year we failed to include many topics we had discussed in private. Consequently this will mean that the posts will be much more in depth about the process and show in detail every step we go through.
Lastly we would like to include a wider type of posts due to the lack of variety I used last year. This year I would like to embed more posts because by doing so using a wider range websites to incorporate my ideas. Also the use of Gifs would be beneficial because i won't have to upload many youtube videos and therefore save both time and make it easier for people to see a short clip.
